Exciting New Additions – Bilingual Italian/English Short Stories

The nuances of language can be subtle, so wouldn’t it be wonderful if we all could read a book in the original language?

  • Madame Bovary (1856) by Gustave Flaubert in French
  • Crime and Punishment (1866) by Fyodor Dostoevsky in Russian
  • One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967) by Gabriel García Márquez in Spanish
  • The Name of the Rose (1980) by Umberto Eco in Italian

Alas, many of us will be content to read in translation.

Italian publisher la Repubblica is providing an opportunity for readers to enjoy classic works of American and British authors, by publishing bilingual [Italian and English] short stories. Begun in 2008, a different collection is available each year.

Along with the printed text – Italian on the left hand page and English on the facing page – the books also include a CD with the audio version of the story.  The books provide a glossary to aid in the understanding of the English text and the cultural context.

Books with a bilingual text provide language learners with a tool to refresh or improve their understanding of another language.
